HOMEOPATHY IN THE NEWS - Article 2

Homeopathy In Modern Context [ 2007-8-20 ]

EVERY year, we are confronted with one epidemic or the other, leaving behind a devastating effect on the human economy. Today, even after the completion of the mapping of the human genome, we fail our children from dreaded diseases like malaria, measles, dengue fever, encephalitis, tuberculosis and gastroenteritis.

No side effects
With more and more patients developing resistance to the so-called wonder drugs, the doctors are in a dilemma. Despite the best of specific drug treatment, either the patients do not respond favorably or develop side effects.

Nowadays every latest drug of modern medicine has definite adverse effects on some part, organ or system of the human body. Medical experts have proved this beyond doubt repeatedly at various platforms. In the present scenario when more and more cases of tuberculosis are becoming multi-drug resistant (MDR TB) to antituberculor treatment, it is absolutely imperative that focus should be given to alternative therapies.

Alternative medicines have been gaining credence in recent years. Traditional therapies like Ayurveda, Unani, Naturopathy, Siddha and so on are getting popular in the western world. However, still a lot needs to be done in our own country where the people are not aware of these traditional therapies that are an answer to modern maladies. Other forms of alternative therapies popular in the West are yoga and meditation, to which many celebrities are also getting hooked.

These traditional therapies advocate a healthy lifestyle that prevents many diseases unlike the allopathic medicine that is used to counter a specific illness with various side effects. Most of these traditional systems focus on the individual diet, exercises and lifestyle to keep an individual healthy and strengthen the immune system.

Highlighting traditional therapies in the modern context should be the right solution, which is indispensable for achieving the millennium development goal of "health for all" by 2015. As MDR TB is becoming resistant to tuberculosis treatment, homeopathy treatment is coming to the rescue of the patients, and many a case has responded favourably and been cured.

With the western world getting hooked to eastern traditional therapies, alternative medicines have found their way into many countries - US, UK, Canada, Japan and states of the European Union - where most people prefer them to the modern system of medicine.

AIDS and HIV infections have emerged as an all-time threat to the human race. In South Asia itself, the number of patients suffering and dying of AIDS is quite alarming. Homoeopathy as such is able to provide a booster to the vital energy of the suffering patients.

Homeopathic medicines improve the immune system by the very specialised individual, constitutional treatment, which is the basis of treatment in homeopathy. And that is why it is said that homeopathy treats the man in totality who is sick and not the mere disease of some organ or system.

Homoeopathy is a therapeutic system of medicine developed in the 18th century by a German scientist, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. He evolved the homeopathic system with a basic law of similarity i.e. "SIMILIA SMILIBUS CURENTUR". The medicine is selected on the basis of individuality and constitution.

Homoeopathy has already established a name in treating chronic diseases. But it is equally effective in curing acute and serious conditions also. Dr. Hahnemann understood the current outlook towards the disease 200 years ago, which is being discussed nowadays and he emphasised that the man should be treated as a whole. There are certain misconceptions, for example, it takes a very long time or it is good only for children and chronic diseases. Also first, the disease is aggravated, then cured, coupled with a lot of restrictions.

Homoeopathy is a system in which a remedy is chosen on the basis of a patient's individual system comprising his mental, emotional and physical state. Homoeopathy is not a panacea but an elixir of life looking at the positive side of the person with a holistic approach. Homoeopathic treatment has been helping a lot many people with so-called incurable diseases and earning laurels by providing a permanent cure with no adverse effects whatsoever.

Homoeopathy does not underrate the efficacy of other systems and surgery, but derides their commercial abuse.
There are quite a large number of cases, which can be saved from unnecessary surgery if homeopathic treatment is given at a proper time. Homoeopathy has a role to play in preventive medicine, just the way it has done in the case of plague and dropsy. The 21st century will see homoeopathy emerging as a global system of medicine acknowledged and used by many.

Safe and economical
It is believed, beyond all doubts, that homoeopathy is safer, more economical and the most complete medical science in existence. George Vithoulkas, renowned contemporary Greek homoeopath, presents a structure on how pathology progresses. This understanding helps the homoeopath know if the patient is moving towards cure or deteriorating further. This is an area that is not well understood by conventional medical doctors whose treatment very often suppresses the disease while alleviating the overt symptoms.
